COPD AND PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESSES: A STUDY OF EPEDMIOLOGY AND EFFECTS ON MORTALITY

TOPIC: Obstructive Lung Diseases TYPE: Original Investigations PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common respiratory condition that involves persistent symptoms and airflow limitation. Several studies have shown increased prevalence of psychiatric illness (PI) in patients with COPD; however, rates vary widely. Hypoxemia COPD has been associated risk cognitive neuropsychiatric impairment while depression was lower treatment adherence COPD. Despite these associations, investigating the effects PI on mortality readmission remain inconclusive. This study aims to describe evaluate effect in-hospital 30-day readmissions using large United States population-based dataset. METHODS: Data were abstracted from 2010 2018 Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD). Hospitalizations primary diagnosis identified Diagnosis Related Groups 190 192 and/or All Patients Refined-Diagnosis 140; International Classification Diseases-9/10-Clinical Modification codes used identify secondary diagnoses major depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress anxiety somatoform sleep-related disorders, eating alcohol use disorder. Multivariable logistic regression models estimated readmissions. analyses accounted for NRD sampling design. RESULTS: A total 6,452,636 hospitalizations occurred between 2018. Of these, 2,160,417 (34%) carried at least one diagnosis. The most prevalent disorder (58%) followed by disorders (26%), (20%); Concomitant more which younger, female, nicotine users, obese (P-value <0.001).Hospitalizations concomitant had higher adjusted rate [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-1.10, P-value <0.001], as well [aOR: 1.21, CI: 1.20-1.22, <0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: demonstrates 2018, approximately one-third rates. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: should be recognized vulnerable population readmission.
